When living in the city you learn to compromise with little or no closet space in most apartments. Today I’m sharing must-do tricks in order to fit all your clothes in a tiny closet.
Despite the fact that I clean out my closet every 6 months, it seems as if my clothes were never ending. To start, I take everything out and re-hang them. This helps me remember what I have and it also helps me make a donate pile. I give away all items that I have not worn in a year and realistcally will not wear ever (again). If you can do this, you will make your closet 10x easier to deal with all year round. I know that if I have too much, I forget what I have and leads me to over buying. Anyway without further ado, here are my essential tips:
Buy thin velvet hangers
These are my favorite!! Why? Well my clothes doesn’t slide off, it has a clean modern look, and I feel like I can fit more hangers in my closet.
Get rid of those bulky plastic hangers that break easily and place velvet hangers facing the same way for a sleek look. Doing this alone makes my closet look more unison, less chaotic, and even bigger.
Fold your jeans
I used to own over 50 pairs of jeans so you know that I have hung, draped, and even rolled jeans to make them fit in my closet. After donating a few, I realized the easiest way to organize your jeans is by folding and stacking them. I fold my favorites on top and I stack my dress pants in a seperate pile.
Color coordinate
There’s something about color coordinating that makes anything look nice. I like to organize everything by color because it makes my life easier. When I wake up, I literally ask myself what color outfit am I in the mood for.
Anyway, I color coordinate by style. My closet consist of a three or four sections; dresses, shirts, crop tops, and long sleeves.
Layer your clothes on hangers
I wish I could hang one item per hanger but it’s just not possible. Lets be real, no matter how cute it may look on pinterest, we have too much clothes and little space. To be able to hang all my clothes, I layer two or three articles per hanger. I find it easy to match the styles (spaghetti strap w spaghetti strap, ect.) and color in one hanger.
Invest in multi clip hangers
These hangers cost more than your average hanger but they are the best! I highly recommend buying these because they are durable and great for pretty much anything. I use them for my skirts and light jackets.
Don’t end up buying 100 of them because they are heavy duty and on the bulky side. I purchased them on Amazon here.
Drape your long dresses & skirts
The only time I use a plastic hanger is to drape my long summer dresses and skirts. This is the only hanger in my closet like this and it’s a great way to keep your dresses from dragging on the floor.
Use thumb tacks to hang hats
Hanging your hats is the best way to maintain them in great condition. A screw or simple thumb tack works perfectly. This technique also helps me see it everyday so it doesn’t get lost in the forgotten pile.
Get rid of the shoe boxes
I used to keep ALL my shoes in boxes but it took up way too much space so I cut down to only boxing my boujie boots. To keep my shoes in order, I bought this cheap shoe rack and organized my go-to shoes inside the closet. I mainly use this rack for my flats, sneakers and boots. I have a separate rack for my heels in my bedroom (DIY shoe closet).
Stack purses
I stack all my purses inside eachother and place them on the side of the closet floor. Saves space, keeps all your purses in the same area and out of the way.
Hang your belts
Hanging your belts makes it easy and accessible. I use a baby hanger and I usually place it out the way towards the side of the closet.
If you have a lot of clothes like me it will take a good hour to organize your closet. It’s a lot of work but the result is rewarding. Try to get in the habit of cleaning out and organizing your closet. Even if you do it once a year, it’ll help you get ready faster.
