Here’s a very quick and easy way to make a mummy costume with under $10 and no sewing expertise required.
You need:
- Old T-shirt and leggins or long johns (ideally white or cream)
- Scissors
- Hot glue & glue gun
- 3 yards of cheap white or cream fabric
Step 1:
Go to your local fabric store and head straight to the dollar/sales rack for fabric. Choose anything that is not heavy or too sheer (try cotton, linen, polyester). I purchased three yards of fabric and that was enough for hubby and I but it all depends on your body measurements.
Step 2:
I laid out my fabric and imperfectly cut 2-3 inch wide strips the length of the fabric.
Step:3
Before taking out my glue gun, I laid out my shirt and pants on a flat surface and started placing strips on top of my clothes to get an idea of how I wanted the strips to look. The goal is to cover yourunder garment completely with these strips to give off a wrapping affect.
Step 4:
Once I was pleased enough, I removed the strips and started gluing them with a generous amount of glue with my glue gun. The more imperfect you are, the better the mummy costume will turn out so don’t try to lay everything straight and flat because you’ll just end up looking like a stripe marshmallow. I had strips at an angle and left some hanging to make it look more realistic.
Quick tip that I learned in the process and definitely recommend so that you don’t go through the same headache I went through is to insert a cardboard or flat divider in the middle of your pants and shirt so the front and back of the clothes do not get glued together with residue.
Step 5:
Before finishing your shirt or pants, I highly recommend you try it on. Even if you think you got ever corner covered, it makes a huge difference when you try it on. The glue from glue guns dries pretty fast so you don’t have to let it sit for long. I checked myself out a few times in the mirror to correct any gaps and continued gluing. You might need help from someone to help you view the back side or you can be like me and just wear it backwards during the test trial.
For my costume, I did the same steps as above I just cut the shirt and made into crop top and cut the neck off to be able to stretch it over my shoulders.
Step 6 (optional)
Once done, you can add some coco powder or make up for an old dirty look or leave it as is. We used left over strips to wrap our heads and the popular question of the night was how do we go to the bathroom. The best part of it all was that when we got home we didn’t have to unravel anything other than our heads and it was an easy change of clothes. Cheap, cute and fun!
