From $300 to just $100, here’s how I made my own coffee table in 10 simple steps with as minimal equipment as possible. It was super easy, affordable and anyone can make it!
Supplies I Used:
- Two 24″ round oak wood (Size can vary on preference)
- 16″ steel legs
- Stain: Cacao Powder/Coffee/Black Tea
- Transparent matte water-based polyurethane (sealer)
- Foam brush (local dollar store)
- Painters brush (dollar store)
- Small paint roller (dollar store)
- Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer (optional)
- Black Acrylic Paint (optional)
- Painters tape (optional)
- Screwdriver
- 30mm corner brackets (see notes below)
Step 1:
Stain the wood! You can stain wood with natural ingredients found in your kitchen like cocoa powder, coffee, or black tea. Each one will stain differently so make sure to test the mixture on the odd side and let it dry before committing to a shade. For this project, I used half a jar of water and two spoons of cocoa powder. I soaked a foam brush and applied it in stroking motions from one end to the other. I used a blow dryer to speed up the drying process before applying the second coat. I did a total of three coats to achieve this color.
Step 2:
Next, I sealed the wood! This part is extremely important because you do not want the wood to be stained by other liquids or get scratched and damaged. I followed the instructions on the can and apply one coat at a time, letting each coat dry before continuing. Since I have Tasmanian toddlers, I wanted to make sure this table would last long so I coated it about 3x before proceeding to the next step.
Step 3:
I taped off the edges of the top of my table and flipped it over.
Step 4:
I prepared the table for painting by using a primer. I coated it two times with a paint roller let it dry.
Step 5:
I painted the table black using two coats and a small paint roller.
Step 6
Finally, I sealed the paint! Again, I have kids and I did not want the paint to scrape off so I sealed the paint using the same sealer from the previous steps. I coated it three times for the perfect protection and let it dry before continuing.
Step 7:
Repeat steps 1-6 for the second wood piece if not done so.
Step 8:
If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that I had previously ordered my 24″ cuttings from an Etsy shop but it was delivered broken which is was the piece I used for my nesting table. If you´d like the same cut )less than half of a circle, you can ask home depot to cut your round wood before leaving the store. Since my piece was broken I used corner brackets to secure both tables together
Step 9
I attached the legs! For extra security, I attached the two center legs with long screws that reached both pieces of wood. One of the outer legs was leveled with the table using an extra wood left over from the broken round piece. I had my husband take it to work to get it cut but this can also be done at home depot before you leave the store.
Step 10
Find the perfect flowers and enjoy your coffee table at a fraction of the price.
And just like that I made my very own dupe for under $100. I hope this was helpful. All product links can be found above in the supplies section.
